The city was founded in the 13th century. At that time cities were built as fortresses not to let any enemy get inside, the city was surrounded by high walls. The part inside the walls is called Kremlin. The Kremlin in Nizhny Novgorod is well preserved till nowadays.
Nizhny Novgorod is well-known for traditional Russian churches and other architectural monuments, museums, art galleries. As there are a lot of ancient sights in the city, UNESCO has included it into the list of 100 cities of cultural and historical importance.

One of the favorite places for all the tourists and the citizens in Nizhny Novgorod is Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street. It is regarded as an analog of Arbat Street in Moscow. PLACE OF PILGRIMAGE
Diveyevo is a small city near Nizhny Novgorod. It is famous among the Orthodox pilgrims as the Holy abode of St. Seraphim of Sarov.
Saint Seraphim-Diveyevo monastery is considered to be the fourth lot of the Holy Theotokos, which is one of the four places on earth that Theotokos took under her protection – here she comes every day. One of the sacred events of Diveyevo is that it keeps the relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov. On the territory and in the vicinity of the village of Diveyevo there are Holy springs known for their healing. Pilgrims from all corners of Russia and abroad come here with faith in a miracle.

Bolshoye Boldino Museum-Estate
About 200 km away from Nizhny Novgorod Bolshoye Boldino is located. That is the estate of the family of the greatest Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Here tourists have the opportunity to get acquainted with Pushkin`s family tree. The most memorable period in the poet`s life, connected with Boldino, was his self-isolation because of the cholera epidemic in Russia. Pushkin was very productive at that time. He wrote a lot of outstanding works, among them are “Bronze Horseman”, “The Belkin Tales”, “The Queen of Spades” and the last chapters of “Eugene Onegin”.
